Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex 64-bit LiveCD session on a Pangolin Performance panp4i

  1. Ubuntu loaded at 1024x768, stretching the display across my 1280x800 laptop screen.
  2. System -> Preferences -> Screen resolution
  3. Was set to mirrored:
    Screen Resolution dialog: Initial settings
    1. Note that the monitor indicators in the upper left are of different sizes.
    2. (Note: "Mirror Screen" is cut off)
    3. Green screen-box (non-Unknown) is set to 1024x768
  4. (Note: Clicking "help" does nothing)
  5. Uncheck "mirror"
    1. Now the "Unknown" screen-box is all that is visible, and is on top. I can drag it down to reveal "Laptop 15 inch"
  6. Set "Unknown" resolution to Off
    1. Its screen-box turns black, and gets wider
  7. Select "Laptop 15 inch" and choose 1280x800:
Screen Resolution settings: About to apply
    1. The screen-box gets wider, but not as wide as Unknown
  8. Apply
    1. Screen goes black, then comes up at proper resolution
    2. GNOME fills the entire screen
    3. However, the right 56 pixels and bottom 32 pixels are random junk:
      Result of proper settings
      1. [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F1], [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F7] does not clear the junk
      2. Clicking and dragging *works* in the junk zone
      3. Windows maximize to the non-junk area
  9. The screen resolution dialog now shows "Unknown" next to "Laptop 15 inch", instead of below. (Whatever.)
    1. There is now only one monitor indicator in the upper left
  10. In a bid to clear the junk, I set the rotation to Left, and Apply
    1. It works:
      Rotation left seems to work
  11. I set the rotation to Normal, and apply
    1. I'm kicked all the way back to the GDM login screen, starting with the black X cursor
    2. User "ubuntu" automatically logs in after 10 seconds
    3. Screen settings are now perfect!
  12. Just to screw around, I try to set the screen resolution back down to 1024x768
    1. Kicked back to the login screen
    2. Resolution is now 1024x768
  13. Set it back to 1280x800
    1. Not kicked back, but screen has the junk-bars again.
    2. I assume I can fix this again by doing rotation.
